3 Dosha i.e. Vata, Pitta, Kapha; 7 Dhatu i.e. Rasa, Rakta, Mansa, Meda, Asthi, Majja & Shukra; 3 Mala i.e. Mutra, Purisha & Sweda are the basic elements of human body. Balance state of 3 Dosha, 7 Dhatu & 3 Mala is essential to maintain health of healthy person while imbalance in any of these elements lead to various diseases. Different diseases manifest according to various causative factors, aggravation of Dosha causing vitiation of Dhatu & Mala; constitution of a person, season, habitat etc.
Skin diseases called as “Kustha” in Ayurvedic texts are caused due to vitiation 7 body elements i.e. 3 Dosha viz Vata, Pitta, Kapha & 4 Dushya viz skin (twak), Rakta, Mansa & ambu (water element).
Introduction
Normal Skin
Skin that have balanced oil secretions along with a good supply of nutrition and blood is termed as normal skin. Teenagers with normal skin experience fewer skin problems and usually require a basic skin care regime.

Sensitive skin
Your immune system is meant to protect your body from microbial invasions. However, people with sensitive skin tend to have a  hyperactive immune system that perceives various things as possible threats. Those who have  sensitive skin must be aware of their triggers factors.

Oily skin
While sebum keeps your skin healthy and moisturized, too much can lead to oily skin. This occurs when the sebaceous glands secrete more oil than required.. Oily skin either be genetic or a result of underlying health conditions such as hormonal fluctuations experienced during puberty.

Dry skin
Skin deprived of essential moisture is known as dry skin. When your sebaceous glands do not secrete sebum, your skin can become dry and dull. Symptoms such as itchiness, skin peeling, cracking, flaking, redness and inflammation often accompany this. Dry skin may be temporarily and some teenagers tend to experience it in the winter when humidity is low.

Combination Skin
This type of skin experiences excess oil secretions in the T zone (nose, fore head, inner cheeks and chin) . while the rest of the face has dry skin. The skin type is often prone to pore clogging and acne.

to Ayurveda
The skin type  is determined by the level of doshas, vata, pitta and kapha. The characteristic of each dosha dominated skin type

The skin is the largest sense organ of the body. It si known as Twacha त्वचा . In Ayurveda  in which in Sanskrit means that which "covers ". IT serves as an external conductor  of neurological impulses referred to in Ayurveda  as VATA.

Ayurvedic seers has observed the skin to have seven layers which correspond to the more recently discovered modern anatomy of the skin. These seven layers described in Ayurveda literature along with  their modern co-relates are :
  1. Avabhasini : अवबासिनी (Stratum corneum) As the outermost layer, it is the source of complexion and reflects the quality of the Rasa Dhatu (primary nutrient fluids) in our body.  This indicates any inner health or disorder that we may have and whether the body’s physiology as a whole is balanced or imbalanced.  Devoid of its own colour, it reflects the colours of inner layers and the aura of the individual.  When affected, pimples, acne, dandruff etc arise on the body.  It resembles the colour of molten iron. Avabhasini: As the outermost layer, it is the source of complexion and reflects the quality..ऊपर के चमड़े का काम । चमड़े की पहली पर्त  According to Ayurveda, the first layer of skin is called ''Avabhasini' that glows by itself. Over the years due to stress, pollution, and aging.
  2. Lohita : लोहिता (Stratum lucidium) means refers to blood or red. As the second layer, Lohita supports the outermost layer and indicates the quality. As the second layer, Lohita supports the outermost layer and indicates the quality of Rakhta Dhatu (blood).  Any changes or impurities on this layer affects the Avabhasini layer and can cause moles, dark circles or black pigmentation of the skin when impure.
  3. Sweta : श्‍वेता (Stratum granulosum) White as pure milk. As the third layer, it is white and provides balance to skin colour, As the third layer, it is white and provides balance to skin colour, lightening the darker colours of the inner layers.  When impaired by doshas, it can cause diseases like eczema, allergic rashes etc.
  4. Tamra : ताम्र (Stratum spinosum) Copper coloured. As the fourth layer, Tamra nurtures the upper layers of the skin and supports the immune system.  It helps the skin perform its function of being a barrier.  Copper coloured, dosha of this layer causes skin infections.
  5. Vedini : वेदिनी (Stratum germinetivum) संवेदनशील All sensations and feelings lie in this fifth layer which connects the skin to the rest of the body.  Dosha of this layer can cause diseases like herpes.
  6. Rohini : रोहिणी (Dermis) meaning heat.आग, This layer supports healing and regeneration.  Imbalance in this layer retards healing and the disappearance of scars over time and can cause cancer, tumors etc.
  7. Mamsadhara : मांस धरा (Subcutaneous tissue and muscles of skin) “muscle” or “flesh holding. As the innermost layer of the skin, Mamsadhara is the platform for the skin’s stability and firmness.  When affected by doshas, it can cause abscesses or fistulas.
The Ayurvedic biology of cells of the skin as that of the rest of the body is regulated by three fundamental physiological functions :
KAPHA (anabolic)

It is  common experience that the physiology of skin also changes naturally with age. Thus, the texture, glow and structure changes naturally with age. Thus the texture, glow and structure  changes from childhood (balya), to youth (taruna), to old age (vardhakya). In old age , the typical changes, that occur naturally are greying of hair, wrinkles and looseness of the skin, discoloration and dryness, loss of suppleness, brown spots, and loss of luster.. These changes are due to the non-optimal functioning of kapha, vata and pitta  due to ageing.

It is important for the readers to appreciate that  the secret of skin health does not lie in cosmetics and medicine.. These can only have temporary effect. The real secret is  consuming healthy food  suited to your unique phenotype (prakruti) and good  metabolism. This will lead to good nourishment and reflect in the skin health.

ON SKIN HEALTH:

A number of factors determine skin health and youthfulness. These include proper moisture balance (Kapha in balance), effective functioning of the metabolic mechanisms that coordinate all the various chemical and hormonal reactions of the skin (Pitta in balance), and efficient circulation of blood and nutrients to the different layers of the skin (Vata in balance).

Furthermore, the health of three types of body tissue are especially reflected in the skin: nutritional fluid, blood and muscle. The nutrient fluid “feeds” all of the body’s tissues and keeps the skin healthy; blood is associated with liver function and purifies the skin; and muscle provides skin firmness.

We have to keep all these skin layers healthy by balancing doshas. We can balance our doshas by following proper Diet (ahara) and lifestyle (Vihara} (diet and life style modifications) .This makes our skin healthy.

  • Drink plenty of fresh clean water to help eliminate body wastes and toxins. It also keeps constipation at bay.
  • Incorporate fresh fruits and vegetables in major portion of your diet. Dark green and orange vegetables and fruits have antioxidants and also possess cancer fighting properties.
  • Lack of sleep causes dark circles and diminishes the glow of your skin. Aim for 7-8 hours to keep the skin healthy and glowing.
  • A brisk walk for 45 minutes keeps the skin healthy by improving blood circulation and eliminating toxins. Lack of exercise leads to dull looking skin.
  • Avoid any form of tobacco, alcohol or drugs which can make the skin look lifeless and unattractive.
  • Find ways to handle stress that can cause dark circles, loss of complexion and cause the skin to age.  Try out yoga, meditation or incorporate some deep relaxation technique into your daily lifestyle.
  • And lastly, avoid sweets, chocolate, junk food, deep fried, oily and spicy food.
